Students Collect 4450 Food Items for Our Lady of Assumption Church Thanksgiving Food Drive

VENTURA, CA, December 5, 2011 – St. Bonaventure High School rallied to replenish Our Lady of Assumption Church’s food pantry that feeds the hungry at Thanksgiving and throughout the year. Religion teacher, Deacon Bill Wilson, heard about the Ventura county food shortages on the evening news and took the plea for help to Principal, Marc Groff.  Together, they rallied the school community and collected 4450 food items in just 5 days.

Deacon Wilson knew that he could answer the prayers of the hungry by drawing on the “Seraph Spirit” for an emergency food drive.  Mr. Groff announced a call for action on Friday, November 18, and by Wednesday, November 23, thousands of food items were brought in by students, faculty and staff.  The food was donated to Our Lady of Assumption Church that serves needy families of the parish, as well as, overflow families of Catholic Charities and the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

Thanks to the collective efforts of the St. Bonaventure community, enough food was collected to feed the hungry at Thanksgiving and fill food boxes for Christmas too.   It is St. Bonaventure High School’s mission to nourish the mind, body and spirit and to make the needs of the poor and vulnerable a priority.
