Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary High School Boys Basketball team wins the Cardinal Classic Tournament
MONTEBELLO, CA. (JANUARY 17, 2012) Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary High School hosted the 18th Annual Cardinal Classic Holiday Basketball Tournament. This tournament is one of the largest in the greater Los Angeles and Orange county area, with more than 16 teams participating this year. “Our tournament has a great reputation among area basketball tournaments”, said Omar Villalta CSHM High School Athletic Director.
The tournament occurred from December 12th to the 17th. “It is a great opportunity for our teams to get great exposure to a variety of talent”, said CSHM Boys Varsity Coach George Zedan. “We ended up playing El Camino in the semifinal. They are a very good team. Then we had to face Oceanside High School in the finals. We went into overtime and won by 12 points. This win was great for the kids who have been here since they were freshmen. It gave them the feeling that they can win big games.”
Coach George Zedan joins the Cardinal Athletic program for the first time after 5 years as an Assistant Boys Basketball Coach at Montebello High School. The team is extremely strong with several key players coming together for the first time. The rock of the team is junior Jose Estrada Stone. Jose is an international student from Mexico attending CSHM High School. Jose is regarded as one of our best talents. Jose chose CSHM because of family friends in the Montebello area who recommended CSHM to continue his high school education.
The Cardinal tournament was started in 1993. Initially it was a coed tournament with 8 boys’ teams and 8 girls’ teams competing. In 2000 it evolved to just being a boy’s tournament. This was the first time that the Cardinal’s have won their tournament.
