Bishop Montgomery Alumna Carmelita Jeter ’98 Named Los Angeles Sportswoman of the Year
Torrance (January 20, 2012): Bishop Montgomery High School alumna and U.S. and World 100m track champion Carmelita Jeter ’98 was named LA Sportswoman of the Year by the Los Angeles Sports Council on January 19, 2012. Jeter is the reigning “Fastest Woman in the World” after winning the gold medal in the 100m at the 2011 World Track & Field Championships in Korea in a time of 10.90. At the 2011 World Championships, Jeter also won a silver medal in the women’s 200m and she ran the anchor leg on the U.S. gold medal winning 4x100m relay.
In 2009, Jeter ran the 2nd fastest 100m time ever recorded by a woman when she posted a time of 10.64 at a meet in Shanghai. The only woman to run a faster 100m is the late Florence Griffith-Joyner, who ran 10.49 in 1988.
Jeter will be presented with the award at the Los Angeles Sports Awards at the Nokia Center on March 15, 2012.
