DANCE COMPETITION TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SCHOOLS’ INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAMS

St. Monica Catholic Schools will host “Dancing with Our Stars” a competition where audience members will vote for their favorite dance couple!

After an expressed interest from St. Monica Catholic Schools’ administrations, President Thom Gasper, and a number of parents, an instrumental music program was designed to benefit elementary and high school students!  School administration hired an instrumental music instructor to head up the effort and to introduce our students to musical instruments as part of a comprehensive curriculum.  Students are currently being exposed to a number of instruments as well as a milieu of musical styles.  Though music budgets are often the first to go in a struggling economy, St. Monica Catholic Schools is building their music program.  This requires some clever and creative fundraising.  In October, a community Sock Hop was held to assist in the funding of the instrumental music program.  Dancers from throughout the city came for live music, professional dance instruction, and a wonderful evening.   The sock hop was a fantastic beginning to what the community hopes will be a great tradition of music and dance at St. Monica!

After the great success of the St. Monica Sock Hop, the St. Monica Auditorium will once again play host to a fantastic dancing extravaganza, “Dancing with Our Stars!” Several staff members from St. Monica Catholic Schools and Church have been preparing for a community dance-off!  On February 3, staff members of St. Monica Catholic Schools and Church will pair up with local dance professionals for a dance competition during which each dance couple will perform a routine to a style of their choosing (guests will see the range of dance styles such as Tango, Cha Cha, and maybe even a Waltz).  Elementary school principal, Dr. Quinly; high school principal, Alex Chacon; and Fr. Tim Klosterman are among our brave contestants (which includes teachers from both schools)!

Student tickets are $5 and adult tickets are $10.  Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.  Audience members will be voting for the top performances and there will be some audience dance opportunities as well!  Consider joining us for this fun community event!  Looking ahead, we will also host another Sock Hop on March 23.  Please contact Tara Miller at (310) 394-3701 x1303 or tmiller@stmonicahs.net for more information.
