San Gabriel, CA, January 30, 2012: Catholic Schools Week at San Gabriel Mission High School began with a Catholic Identity Assembly and the dynamic guest speaker, Sister Helen Prejean. She is the author of Dead Man Walking, her most talked about book that was made into a play, an opera, and a major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.

As part of a service project at SGMHS, the entire student body including Religion and English teachers had read Sister Prejean’s book. Students were able to discuss the death penalty and write essays about the book.

The faculty and staff were able to speak with Sister Helen before her speech. Once she heard that the Journalism Club was meeting during lunchtime, she so kindly asked to attend their meeting and speak to them as well. The students were grateful and listened intently as Sister Helen offered them some great writing tips for the school’s newspaper.

During the assembly not a sound was heard but Sister Helen’s voice. The entire student body and guests listened attentively as she spoke of her experiences with death-row inmates, their families and the victim’s families. The most astounding fact to learn was that the majority of convicted death-row inmates are innocent. As she spoke, Sister Helen’s faith and compassion for mankind was not only inspirational but very moving.

When sister finished her presentation, she answered questions from the audience. After the assembly she signed books and autographs.

Sister Helen Prejean definitely made a lasting impression on the students, faculty and staff of San Gabriel Mission High School. What a memorable day!

Sacred Heart High School videographers chosen as finalists in regional student video contest:

Students in the Video Production class at Sacred Heart were thrilled to hear that a judging panel from the Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) selected their video as one of five finalists in the AAA Teen Video Contest. Their video, entitled “Road to Bollywood,” was selected from over 100 student submissions from all over Southern California. The contest asked students to highlight the dangers of distracted driving and the class did this by playing a Bollywood dance troupe that drives recklessly to a dance competition.

The AAA video submission was directed by seniors Danessa Inguito and Lisa Jimenez. Danessa also choreographed the dance sequences and composed original music using Apple’s “Garageband.” Lisa provided all the camerawork and voiced the narration; both girls worked on the editing. Student cast members included Sacred Heart seniors Brittney Avila, Victoria Avila, Danessa Inguito, Veronica Lara, Laura Munoz, Jennifer Perea, Nicole Richardson and Tahiez Toro.

The Video Production class is not new to outside recognition. Throughout the ten years that the course has been a part of the school’s curriculum, it has won numerous awards, particularly from the California Student Media Festival.

The winning video will be announced on April 20th and will run as a commercial on AAA’s website. The grand-prize winner also receives a prize of $2,500.

Online voting for the winning video is currently underway at www.aaa.com/contest and is open to all until the 23rd of February. AAA allows for viewers to vote once a day per household.

On Thursday February 2nd Sacred Heart High School’s Barristers Club attended a special visit to Southwestern Law School in Downtown Los Angeles. The visit was hosted by Southwern’s Laura Cohen, Director of Street Law Clinic and Community Outreach, and several volunteer law students. This is the second consecutive year that the Barristers club visited the historic school. In its 100th year at the forefront of legal education, Southwestern Law School was one of the first law schools to encourage the enrollment of women and minorities.

Volunteer law students presented the summary of a trial dealing with First Amendment rights. In small groups the Sacred Heart High School students discussed the complexities of the trial. One group was assigned the prosecution, another the defense, and one group was designated as the Supreme Court judges who were to questions both sides about this particular case. At the end of deliberations students were also given an opportunity to re-write the law and with the guidance of the law students, the Sacred Heart Barristers attempted to improve the language of this law.

Third year law student Timothy Sutton, Co-Chair of the Negotiation Honors Program and Editor-in-chief of The Commentator (Southwestern’s student run newsmagazine), also gave a presentation on immigrant rights. During this presentation students were given a summary of Southwestern Law School’s children’s rights, immigration law, and street law clinics. All of these clinics teach high school students and youth throughout Los Angeles about enhancing their tools for addressing social problems and further develop their understanding of public interest work. Students were also given a tour of the historic Bullocks Wilshire building which is listed on the National Register of historic places.

Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary High School freshmen will use I-pads this fall.

MONTEBELLO, CA. (FEBRUARY 10, 2012) Beginning this fall, all Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary freshmen will be using iPads instead of traditional textbooks.

“I am so excited that we are the first Catholic high school in the San Gabriel Valley to implement this technology in our school curriculum,” said Principal David Chambers. “Our students, though, are the real winners here.”

According to Chambers, Catholic schools are held to very high standards.

“We are responsible in helping each child reach his or her full potential,” he said. “We feel that the implementation of iPad technology throughout our curriculum will help us reach that goal.”

This, however, requires a significant investment in the networking infrastructure of the school.

“We have set goals for making the infrastructure capable of handling the highest capacity of internet use that our students require,” said Assistant Principal Robert Fraley. “The infrastructure of the school has been updated from 4.5 mbps to 45 mbps to handle the high capacity of internet use.”

“The entire campus will have Wi-Fi capability because of a fiber optic network that was installed this past December,” said Chambers. “The campus will be equipped to handle the entire student body, along with faculty and staff, with their needs in using the iPads.”

Teachers will receive a variety of professional development training designed to help them bring this wealth of interactive technology directly into the hands of students.

Interactive eBooks will replace hard copies of textbooks and allow students to learn in a greater variety of ways.

“The cost effectiveness of eBooks, in some cases, can be up to 30% less than traditional textbooks,” added Chambers. “I am proud that our school can pave the way for other Catholic high schools who are considering this technology in their curriculum.”

The announcement came during Catholic Schools Week, a nationwide celebration focusing on Faith, Academics and Service.
